Costa Rica's Classic Multi-Stop Route: Volcano, Cloud Forest & Beach
If you have a week or more, Costa Rica's classic loop lets you experience volcanoes, cloud forests, rainforest and beaches in a single trip. Here's how the route works.
The Route Overview
The most popular version runs SJO → La Fortuna (Arenal) → Monteverde → Manuel Antonio → SJO. It captures the country's greatest hits: a volcano, a cloud forest, wildlife-rich rainforest, and Pacific beaches, all in a logical geographic flow.
You can also start or end in Guanacaste via LIR if beaches are your priority.
Stop 1: La Fortuna & Arenal
Base yourself here for two to three nights. Hike the volcano, soak in hot springs, chase waterfalls, and cross hanging bridges. It's the adventure hub of the trip.
From SJO, it's about a 3-hour drive to reach La Fortuna.
Stop 2: Monteverde Cloud Forest
Next, head to Monteverde for two nights of misty forests, ziplines, and exceptional birdwatching. The famous 'jeep-boat-jeep' transfer across Lake Arenal is the fastest way between Arenal and Monteverde — around 3 to 4 hours total.
The cooler mountain air is a refreshing change from the lowlands.
Stop 3: Manuel Antonio
Finish on the coast at Manuel Antonio for beaches and easy wildlife sightings — sloths, monkeys and more in the national park. Two to three nights lets you relax after the earlier adventure.
From Monteverde, it's roughly a 4 to 5 hour drive to Manuel Antonio.
How Long Do You Need?
This route works well over 8 to 10 days. Rushing it in less time means too much of your trip spent in transit. Give each stop at least two nights to actually enjoy it.
